Help for Departments
UCSB departments, research institutes and other offices annually host over 900 international
academic visitors on non-immigrant visas. To help departments determine the most
appropriate visa category to use for an international scholar’s visit, the Office
of International Students and Scholars requests that departments obtain the answers
to four questions about a scholar’s citizenship, proposed
UCSB visit and past visa history. OISS provides information and support for a variety
of non-immigrant visa categoriesincluding F-1, J-1, H-1B,
and TN that may be used by visiting scholars. Most international scholars come to
UCSB in one of the J-1 visa categories. UCSB departments use the J-1 on-line request
system to invite a scholar to UCSB. The on-line request system will generate the
DS-2019 form that the scholar takes to the U.S. Consulate to apply for the J-1 visa.
Tips on hosting a scholar are provided to help departments
in their planning for a scholar’s visit.
