Blue Dolphin Book Club

“The morning was fresh from the rain. The smell of the tide pools was strong. Sweet odors came from the wild grasses in the ravines and from the sand plants on the dunes. I sang as I went down the trail to the beach and along the beach to the sandspit. I felt that the day was an omen of good fortune. It was a good day to begin my new home.”
― Scott O'Dell,
Island of the Blue Dolphins

Island of the Blue Dolphins
is a classic in American literature. Most California students have read this book. The language is lovely and poetic, without being overly complex. The narrative is inspired by the true story of the Lost Woman of San Nicolas, later called Juana Maria, a young woman who was left behind when her tribe went to the mainland. She spent 18 years alone on the island before coming to Santa Barbara. She lived just a few weeks before falling ill and dying. She is buried at the Santa Barbara Mission. Many parts of her life and history remain a mystery that fascinate scientists and historians to this day.
The Blue Dolphin Book Club (BDBC) is intended to be a fun, social group that will read this classic book, a few chapters each week, and then talk about what we read. We will watch some films about the Lost Woman of San Nicolas, and take trips to explore her world.
