Congratulations on your acceptance to UCSB! You are about to begin a fast-paced academic adventure. UCSB is one of the top research universities in the world, challenging even for native English speakers. For international students, the challenge is even greater.
Program Dates: August 15 - September 9, 2016
The month-long English Language & California Culture Summer Intensive is designed to help you meet this challenge while you begin earning academic credit. Participants are enrolled in "English for Academic Success"--two 3-unit sessions--to earn a total of 6 units of UCSB credit toward your undergraduate degree. You will be earn 6 credits before the Fall quarter begins, as you familiarize yourself with the UCSB campus community and learn to be a successful, confident student in a US university. This program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Graduate students: This is undergraduate credit that will not apply towards your graduate program, but enrolling in this credit-bearing program will qualify you to enter the U.S. as early as July 17. Graduate students who will be able to move into campus housing during the program may opt out of the housing & meal fee if they have alternate housing. Questions? The Summer Intensive will strengthen your oral proficiency and conversation skills. You will work in small groups with patient instructors who specialize in teaching English to international students. The emphasis in the academic English course will be on enhancing your comprehension, pronunciation, and your fluency for active participation in university lectures, sections and labs.Classes will include small group discussions, problem-solving, listening and note-taking practice, vocabulary building, pronunciation exercises, and taped student presentations.
On the weekends and evenings, you will explore your new home with visits to local landmarks and historic sites. You will learn the best ways to get around town and where to find delicious food. You will learn what makes Santa Barbara one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. We will even travel to the Channel Islands, a unique habitat and marine sanctuary. You may even spot one of the formerly endangered Channel Islands foxes or a migrating whale!
Arriving early will help you adjust to American culture before the rush of the Fall quarter begins. Our group will guide you through shopping and navigating campus resources.

By the end of the workshop, you will be confident in traveling by bus or train, so you will be able to get the full benefit of your time in California.
The program is ideal for graduate students who will be taking the TA language exam. The program will help you practice speaking English with patient and experienced instructors who will coach you to do your best on the test.
The English Language & California Culture Summer Intensive is $4890, which includes 6 units of academic credit, all housing and basic meals (see note for graduate students above), tickets and transportation to excursions.
