Resources for Parents

It can be challenging to watch a student navigate a new environment from far away. OISS recognizes that been the parent of an international student can a source of stress, as well as a source of great pride. Your student has earned a place at one of the top research universities in the world! Congratulations!
Some students struggle with their initial adjustment to the college environment. Parents can struggle as well. Our hope is to provide a few resources to help you.

Student privacy and FERPA is new to most international familes. FERPA is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.FERPA prevents universities, professors, or staff from disclosing private information about any student over age 18. At UC Santa Barbara, students are regarded as capable of managing their own records and determining who can access information about them.

Parents are not able to view private information without written authorization from the student. Private information includes, but is not limited to: transcripts, exam scores, physical and mental health records, disciplinary actions, financial aid, and advising records. OISS cannot release information to parents without written authorization.

This means that your student's billing records are also private, however, your student can give you access to their BARC (Billing and Accounts Receivable) so that you can make payments on your student's behalf. Your student will need to grant you access.

Students can also grant their parent/guardian access to certain areas of the secured Student Health Gateway Portal as Authorized Representatives. By visiting the Student Health website, students can access a “How-To” document from the drop-down menu which walks you through this process. This feature allows your parent/guardian to:
*Enter Immunization Information
*Enter and review Insurance Waiver
*Enroll in Gaucho Access Plan (GAP)
